Self-portraits & Motherhood
This Mother’s Day I wanted to make sure I devoted a little time to documenting this chapter of my life. I’m by no means new to the role of “mother” and yet, as with all roles, I feel like a perpetual learner. Which is, no doubt, as it should be. It’s been a year of massive change and finding ways to make sure I stay found in all of it. That I may avoid losing myself along the way. Photographing myself is a way of producing documentation I can look back to whenever I want to tell myself the story of me.
Motherhood is a wild ride. Being a woman in your early 40s is a wild ride. Made wilder still by the fact that nobody really knows what they’re doing. We’re all just tap dancing it after all.
Maybe some of us took lessons. Possibly a few of us got to practice the choreo. I promise, nobody has the right shoes. And maybe the dance can’t even really be defined anyway.
But it all works out in the end. So whilst on said wild ride, please remember to always, and with love, define it for yourself.
Happy Mother’s Day to all who mother in ways both seen and unseen. Much love. 2024.
